Last week I sat in a meeting that felt like déjà vu.
Same agenda. Same slides. Same coffee that tastes like it was brewed during the last financial crisis.

At some point someone said, “This is how we’ve always done it.”
And there it was—the most expensive sentence in business.
It doesn’t sound dramatic. It sounds safe. Like a warm blanket on a chilly Monday.
But really? It’s comfort wearing a fancy suit.

The Fixed Mindset Trap

A fixed mindset is a master of excuses:

“I’m just not good at that.”
“That’s not my strength.”

In leadership it sneaks out as:

“This process works for us.”
“No need to change what isn’t broken.”

But here’s the thing—sometimes it is broken.
We just don’t want the awkward effort of fixing it.
Comfort whispers: stay here, it’s safe.
And comfort, left unchecked, is a silent killer of innovation.

The Quiet Hero: Growth Mindset

A growth mindset doesn’t shout.
It shows up as the quiet inner voice that says:

“I don’t know it yet, but I can learn.”
“Today’s failure is tomorrow’s lesson.”

✨ Effort counts as much as results.
✨ Feedback isn’t an attack—it’s information.
✨ Setbacks? They’re proof you’re moving, not standing still.

It’s the colleague who signs up for that coding class even though Excel still feels like black magic.
It’s the leader who asks, “Why are we doing it this way?” even when the old system is as comfy as a worn-out pair of slippers.

My Little Wake-Up Call

A few months back I pitched a process change I believed in.
The first attempt? A spectacular flop.
I considered retreating into “Well, I tried.”
But something nudged me—call it stubborn hope.
I asked for feedback, rewrote the proposal, and tried again.
This time it worked.

Turns out “failure” was just free training with a dramatic opening act.

Comfort or Growth—Your Call

Growth mindset isn’t reckless change.
It’s simply refusing to let comfort decide your future.

So, here’s my question to you:

👉 Where have you been clinging to “this is just how we do it”?
👉 What’s one small, brave step you can take this week to trade comfort for growth?

Because the next time someone says “We’ve always done it this way,”
you might just smile, sip that terrible coffee, and quietly start rewriting the script.

Your turn—drop your story below. Where have you swapped comfort for growth and surprised yourself?
